Damascus, SANA – Prime Minister Imad Khamis discussed on Monday with the Farmers General Union the initial features of the government’s vision on the development and support of the agricultural sector.
Participants at the meeting reviewed the situation of the agricultural sector and how it reflects on the lives of citizens, in addition to discussing mechanisms for supporting agriculture in correct ways to increase production and raise export rates in order to contribute to increasing foreign currency revenues.
The issue of agricultural debts as well as the state of the poultry sector, problems it suffers, and proposals to address them and ways to secure feed were also discussed.
Participants made suggestions regarding encouraging domestic agriculture and preserving local agricultural products, making proposals concerning scientific agricultural research in addition to solutions to improve marketing citrus, wheat, and barley crops, establishing factories for juice, cork, and plastic containers, and using modern irrigation methods and alternative energy sources.
The heads of unions and agricultural offices in provinces called for focusing on growing wheat during the agricultural plan, supporting women in rural areas, particularly wives of martyrs and wounded persons who lost their providers, and supporting tobacco growing.
The General Union also presented its vision for cooperation and coordination with the government, unions, and civil society organizations.
