Moscow, SANA – Intra-Syrian dialogue is likely to resume in the beginning of July after the end of the holy month of Ramadan, Russian President’s Special Envoy for the Middle East and Africa Affairs, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Tuesday.
Three rounds of UN-brokered indirect talks were held in 2016 between the delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic and “opposition” delegations. The latest one ended on April 27 2016.
No date has been set so far for the resumption of talks, said Bogdanov in a statement to Novosti news agency, adding that “we are waiting information from the UN Special Envoy for
Syria Staffan de Mistura about this.”
Bogdanov noted that de Mistura might make some contacts with the Syrian sides before and during Ramadan, ruling out the possibility that the talks could be resumed before the end of the holy month.
The Russian official reiterated that direct dialogue and involving representatives of the Syrian Kurds in the talks is the best choice.
