Lavrov discusses with Zarif and Kerry combating terrorism in Syria

Moscow, SANA-Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif affirmed on Tuesday the need for combating terrorist organizations in Syria “without leniency” and block tunnels of their support and funds coming from outside.

“The two ministers, in a telephone call, called on the regular meeting of Syrian Support Group of Vienna to give a special attention to implementing the international resolutions and concentrating on fighting terrorist organizations, mainly ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

It added the two sides also discussed the cessation of hostilities in Syria and the humanitarian aid program, pointing out to the importance for realizing a stable political process with the participation of representatives from the government and opposition powers, in light of UN Security Council resolutions No. 2254 and 2268.

Syria Support Group will hold a meeting on May 17th in Vienna.

In the same context, Lavrov discussed with his US counterpart John Kerry the necessity of boosting the cessation of hostilities agreement in Syria.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that both sides, during a telephone call, discussed means of combating terrorist organizations in Syria and supporting the intra-Syrian talks in Geneva under the supervision of the UN.
