Ministry of Education and UNECIF discuss rehabilitation of damaged schools

Damascus, SANA – Education Minister Hazwan al-Waz discussed with the Resident Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNECIF) in Syria Hana Singer ways of enhancing cooperation between the two sides in the field of rehabilitating terrorism-damaged schools and providing the educational process requirements.

Minister al-Waz said rehabilitating schools and providing school supplies in the areas to which the army recently restored security and stability, especially those in Aleppo and Hasaka, are among the Ministry’s priorities.

In turn, Singer said the projects and programs implemented by the UNECIF in cooperation with the Ministry are going well, emphasizing both sides’ keenness to provide an appropriate educational environment that supports the educational work and meets the students’ needs, expressing hope for continued cooperation with the Ministry to assess the situation on the ground and provide support accordingly.

The cost of damage caused to the educational sector in Syria due to the terrorist attacks has been estimated at about SYP 235 billion, as around 5000 out of 22650 schools have gone out of service.
