Homs, SANA – The technical team of the Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums (DGAM) has begun restoration works at the National Museum of Palmyra, operating on a number of artifacts and statues with the participation of Polish experts.
Eng. Hossam Hamish, Head of the DGAM Department in Homs, said in a statement to SANA that restoration works at the Museum will continue for an indefinite period of time and will include restoring the museum’s building and restoring and preserving a number of archeological artifacts, statues and mosaic pictures.
He noted that a large number of artifacts were vandalized or damaged by ISIS terrorists.
Hamish said the team is also involved in documenting and creating an inventory of the artifacts, furniture and offices in the building.
Restoration of the archeological site of Palmyra will start once the bomb disposal operation is finished, he noted.
The operation is being carried out by engineering units of the Syrian army in cooperation with Russian experts, as thousands of bombs and explosive devices have already been defused, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
Hamish also said Homs branch of the DGAM is continuing documenting and restoration works of the archeological buildings in Homs city, including several mosques, that sustained damaged due to terrorist acts.
On March 27th, army units and the popular defense groups restored security and stability to Palmyra city and its archeological site that is placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
