Moscow: Russia working with US to preserve cessation of hostilities in Syria, support dialogue in Geneva

Moscow, SANA – Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia is working diligently alongside the United States to prevent breaches of the cessation of hostilities agreement in Syria, noting that Kremlin is aware of the fragile nature of this standing cessation.

In a statement to journalists on Monday, Peskov said that any breach would threaten this fragile and unstable cessation of hostilities, which is why Russia is working constantly to lower the number of breaches with the goal of stopping them completely, adding that Russia is carrying out this task alongside the US within the framework of the mechanisms that the two countries agreed upon.

On a relevant note, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia, in cooperation with the United States, is exerting efforts for the continuation of the intra-Syrian dialogue in Geneva between the Syrian government and the whole spectrum of the opposition.

During a press conference with Swiss counterpart Didier Burkhalter in Moscow, Lavrov said that Russia is grateful to Switzerland for the support it provides for the intra-Syrian dialogue, including hosting the talks in Geneva.

Lavrov added that the UN, with the support of Russia and the US as the co-chairs of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG), are currently exerting special efforts to ensure the continuation of the dialogue in Geneva.
