Syrian Science Olympiad holds trials to select teams representing Syria in 2016 international competitions

Damascus, SANA – The National Commission for the Syrian Science Olympiad conducted trails to select the national teams which will be representing Syria in the international Science Olympiad competitions in 2016.

The trials took place on Friday at the Higher Institute for Applied Science and Technology.
Touring the examination halls, Minister of Higher Education Mohammed Amer al-Mardini expressed deep confidence in the participating students’ ability to achieve remarkable results and obtain medals at the upcoming international events.

For his part, Head of the National Commission for the Syrian Science Olympiad Imad al-Azeb noted that Syrian youths proved themselves by achieving good results in Science Olympiad competitions over the past years, expressing hope that the selected students will achieve a good ranking in the upcoming competitions.

In turn, Director of the Higher Institute for Applied Science and Technology Maher Suleiman said that the concept of the Science Olympiad is in line with the institute’s goals, indicating to the support provided by the institutethrough its trainers and supervisors, in addition to setting up the exams.

The exams lasted for 4 hours, simulating the international Science Olympiad exams in terms of duration, organization, and scientific level. Central scientific committees reviewed the answer papers and marked them.

Syria will compete in the following events in 2016: the International Mathematical Olympiad in Hong Kong, the International Physics Olympiads in Switzerland, International Chemistry Olympiad in Georgia, International Informatics Olympiad in Russia, and the International Biology Olympiad in Vietnam. The selected teams will undertake a series of training and qualification programs held by the National Commission for the Syrian Science Olympiad in cooperation with central scientific committees.
