De Mistura hopes Russian partial pullout will have positive impact on Geneva talks

Geneva, SANA – The UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said he hopes the decision of the Russian force reduction in Syria will have a “positive impact” on the Syrian-Syrian dialogue in Geneva.

In a statement on Tuesday read out by a spokesman for the United Nations in Geneva, Ahmad Fawzi, de Mistura said the Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of the partial pullout of Russian forces from Syria at the same day of starting the new round of Syrian talks in Geneva is a “significant development, which we hope will have a positive impact on the progress of the negotiations in Geneva aimed at achieving a political solution of the Syrian conflict.”

Fawzi pointed out that the cessation of hostilities agreement in Syria is generally holding for the 18th day although it is fragile, pointing out that the two task forces in charge of humanitarian aid delivery and monitoring the cessation of hostilities will meet on Wednesday in Geneva.
