Jasmine.. Documentary short film depicts life story of Syrian children in war

Damascus, SANA – The premiere of the Director al-Muhannad Kalthoum’s “Yassmin” (Jasmine) was screened on Wednesday evening at Dar al-Assad for Culture and Arts (Opera House) in Damascus.

The 30-minute documentary film relates the life story of Syrian children under current war waged against their country and its impacts on their dreams and thoughts.

The film also depicts children’s perspective of the ferocious war which destroyed their homes, schools and lands, yet it still reflects their hopes of better future.

Some displaced children at temporary housing centers and martyrs’ sons and daughters, who have greatly suffered from the war, took part in the film whose script was written by Mon’em al-Sa’eedi and al-Muhannad Kalthoum and was produced by “Al-Hayat Picture” Film Company.

Resembling the character of “Yasmin”, Hiba al-Mar’ei, a martyr’s daughter who lost her family, home and school, expressed hope that Syria will recover and become stronger.

Choir of the Martyrs’ Sons and Daughters Schools Establishment, led by Emad Tarqaji, performed a number of national songs, expressing their love and loyalty to the homeland.

At the inauguration ceremony, Kalthoum said that” Jasmine” represents Syrian children who draw the future of the country with their smiles and tears, adding that the film sums up five years of suffering and pain under the war waged against our country and the social and psychological effects of this war on Syria’s children.

Al-Muhannad Kalthoum is a film director, born in Damascus 1982. He got a Bachelor and Master Degree of Arts in Film and TV Directing from the Kharkov State Academy of Culture in Ukraine. He presented several works such as “Why” in 2004, “Hope,Faith and Love” in 2006, and “Enough” in 2010 which tackled racism, in addition to his award-winning film “High Voltage”.
