First liver transplant surgery in Syria successfully conducted

Damascus, SANA – The surgical team in al-Assad University Hospital conducted a first liver transplant operation in Syria for a twelve-years-old child.

Laboratory tests that came up on Tuesday confirmed that the operation was a success.

“A whole team of general surgery doctors, vascular specialists, anesthesiologists and nursing staff conducted the operation on Saturday,” the hospital’s Director Dr. Hussam-Eddin Shibli said in a statement to SANA on Tuesday.

The operation took the surgeons 12 hours, where a small part of the donor’s liver was cut out and transplanted into the child, Shibli said.

Both uncle and nephew are now in good condition, he added.

Dr. Shibli said this kind of operation is “complex and rare”, stressing that it was conducted successfully without seeking help from any foreign expertise and despite all the challenges spawned by the crisis in the country.

The child, whose name is Ahmad, was allowed to walk today and his liver tests were good, which shows that the operation was a success, Dr. Shibli confirmed.

This also shows the Syrian doctors’ determination to continue their work and be good at what they do against all odds, he added.

Al-Assad University Hospital, which was opened in Damascus city in 1988, is considered one of the most important educational hospitals affiliated to the Higher Education Ministry in the country. It provides advanced medical and surgical services to patients. It also conducts medical courses for medicine students, graduates and doctors.
