Geneva, SANA- The United Nations Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura said on Wednesday, about the talks between Syrian government and opposition, that “peace talks might not start as planned in Geneva on Jan. 25th.”
Staffan de Mistura, in an interview with CNN from the Swiss resort of Davos, said he would know on Sunday whether the talks could start the next day, but added that they had to be “serious talks about peace” linked to “concrete demonstrations” such as ceasefires and aid convoys.
“I believe we can start talks, perhaps not on the 25th (of January), but we need to maintain the pressure and the momentum,” he asserted.
Earlier Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov affirmed, in a press conference following his meeting with US State Secretary John Kerry, that there are no ideas about delaying the start of talks in Geneva from this January to next February, pointing out that this is Russian and US stance, saying “we are sure that in the coming days of this month the talks should begin”, but the final decision backs to the United Nations and its Special Envoy to Syria, de Mistura, who communicate effectively with the Syrian government and various opposition parties
