Damascus, SANA- Deputy Prime Minister for Services Affairs, Local Administration Minister Omar Ghalawanji discussed on Sunday with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Stephen O’Brien and the accompanying delegation the relief work in Syria and the challenges facing the implementation of humanitarian response joint plans.
Ghalawanji affirmed the necessity of continuing cooperation and coordination in the relief and humanitarian sector between the Syrian government and the UN organizations operating in Syria, pointing out that the Syrian government represented by the Higher Committee for Relief and since the beginning of the crisis has been exerting all efforts to deal with the crisis and its negative effects.
The minister noted that the strategic goal of the Syrian government in the next stage is to return displaced people to the areas to which the Syrian Arab Army restored stability and security, which requires from the 2016 humanitarian response plan to enhance efforts to achieve this goal such as carrying out projects of temporary housing units, rehabilitating houses that were damaged by the terrorist acts and the infrastructure in those areas to make them ready to receive citizens.
For his part, O’Brien affirmed the importance of enhancing cooperation between the United Nations and the Syrian government to address the humanitarian challenges posed by the situation in Syria, adding that his visit comes within the framework of his keenness to inspect the relief efforts of the United Nations in a member state.
