Paris, SANA- Minister of Education Hazwan al-Waz, who chairs the Syrian National Commission for Education, Science and Culture, affirmed Syria’s keenness to promote the values of UNESCO and support its educational role.
Addressing the 38th session of the UNESCO General Conference currently held in Paris, al-Waz emphasized the importance of supporting programs which aim at achieving sustainable development by 2030 and the educational work plan emanating from it, which will contribute to continuing administrative reform and human resources policy, education for all, lifelong learning and girls’ education.
The minister hailed the UNESCO efforts in mobilizing world opinion and efforts to protect the Syrian cultural heritage from terrorist crimes and attempts to obliterate the identity and history of civilization in Syria.
Al-Waz mentioned the Syrian government’s plans to combat the effects of terrorism in all sectors, mainly educational sector through outlining educational policies that are based on investing human resources in education process, adding that the government has allocated 10,39 % of the state budget for 2016 to continue providing the requirements of general education students, including students who had been internally displaced due to the acts of terrorist organizations.
Minister of Education pointed to Syria’s support for establishing international peace and security and renouncing terrorist practices based on religious and ethnic discrimination and exclusion, human trafficking, the destruction of civilizations and the violation of the sovereignty and peoples’ right to self-determination.
Al-Waz concluded his speech by emphasizing the legitimacy of UNESCO resolutions relating to Jerusalem and the occupied Arab territories, including the occupied Syrian Golan.
Syria committed to utilize national energies to achieve sustainable development of 2030
Minister al-Waz affirmed that Syria is committed to exerting efforts and utilizing national energies to achieve targets of the sustainable development of 2030.
“Syria has decided to realize those targets as it believes in the important role of education as a basic factor in the sustainable development process,” Al-Waz said in an interposition at a high-level meeting to adopt the work plan of the Education Ministry of 2030 in the framework of the 38th session of the UNESCO General Conference.
He said that priority for Syria is to guarantee good and comprehensive education for all and boost life-long education opportunities for all in light of the human and material challenges caused by terrorism.
The Minister called on UNESCO and friendly countries to boost the goal of the international partnership and provide support to Syria in order to resume its efforts in ensuring demands of the educational sector through rehabilitating 5000 schools which were damaged by crimes of armed terrorist organizations.
He appreciated the UNESCO for its pioneering role in consolidating education as one goal of the sustainable development until 2030.
