Tunisian President: So-called Friends of Syria conference held in Tunisia was a mistake

Tunisia, SANA- Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi stressed that the so-called “Friends of Syria” conference, which was held in Tunisia in 2012, was a mistake, and expressed Tunisia’s readiness to coordinate with the Arab countries to crystallize an initiative that accelerates dialogue and leads towards a political solution in Syria.

Essebsi added in an interview given to the Tunisian newspaper al-Shorouq published on Tuesday that it is a shame for the Arabs to remain outside the settlement in Syria, considering what is happening in Syria to be more important than any other issue.

Regarding the possibility of the return of Tunisian terrorists who are fighting in Syria to their country, the Tunisian President said “we don’t prevent any Tunisian from returning to his country, whatever his shortcomings were. This is our policy.”

According to official Tunisian statistics, thousands of Tunisians have joined terrorist organizations in Syria, and some of them were arrested immediately upon returning to Tunisia, while dozens of others were killed in Syria.
