Al-Moallem meets Iranian counterpart, UN chief in New York

New York, SANA- Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem discussed with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif the situation in the region, particularly in Syria.

The meeting came on the sidelines of the UN’s 70th General Assembly in New York.

Zarif hailed the steadfastness of the Syrian leadership and people, affirming the necessity of providing all support to enhance Syria’s steadfastness in facing the terrorist onslaught waged by regional and Western countries against Syria.

He said his country welcomes the Russian efforts in Syria, stressing that Iran will continue to support it.

For his part, Minister al-Moallem reviewed the victories achieved by the Syrian Arab Army against terrorism and expressed his confidence that Iranian’s support for Syria will contribute to defeating terrorists and put an end to the practices of countries conspiring against Syria.

On Thursday, al-Moallem met the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, discussing with him the situation in Syria, counterterrorism efforts, the implementation of Security Council resolutions in this regard and the continuation of the political process to end the crisis.

Both sides also discussed the mission of UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura.

Al-Moallem affirmed that combating terrorism must be a priority, particularly for the United Nations and UN Security Council because “a political resolution cannot be reached without eliminating terrorism,” stressing the importance of implementing the Security Council resolutions and deterring the states and parties that are funding, arming, training and harboring terrorists.

For his part, Ki-moon stressed the importance of enforcing the resolutions of UN Security Council and reaching a political solution that serve ambitions of Syrian people.
