Matviyenko: Decision to allow deployment of Russian armed forces in Syria based on need to stop ISIS

Moscow, SANA – Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko asserted that the Council’s decision to allow the deployment of Russian armed forces in Syria is based on the need to stop the spread of ISIS.
Matviyenko told journalists on Wednesday that this decision is primarily based on the interests of Russia’s national security, because if ISIS isn’t eliminated, it could pose a threat to the world as the terrorist organization spreads to other countries and even to Europe and Russia.

She said that the second reason for taking this decision is to save the Syrian people and eliminate threats to the safety and sovereignty of Syria, noting that ISIS terrorists include members from across the world, even members from Russia, and if these terrorists return to their countries of origin, they will pose threats to their national security.

Matviyenko went on to say that the third reason is that Russia, as a major power, cannot refrain from taking part in combating terrorism, adding that Russia received an official request from the legitimate president who represents the legislative authority in Syria.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Federation Council unanimously approved President Vladimir Putin’s request to deploy Russian air forces outside Russia.
