Peskov: President al-Assad can’t be excluded, Merkel’s statements match

Moscow, SANA – Spokesman for the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said Syria’s destiny is to be determined only by the Syrian people and President Bashar al-Assad cannot be excluded from the settlement process.

In statements to the reporters in Moscow on Thursday, Peskov referred to German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s latest statements in which she said President al-Assad should be involved in reaching a political solution to the crisis in Syria.

Merkel’s statement, Peskov said, are in line with what Russia has repeatedly stressed.

“The Russian side, and most important President [Vladimir] Putin has emphasized this several times that solving Syria’s fate by third countries is impossible,” he added.

“Syria’s fate may be decided by the Syrian people, and artificially excluding the legal and legitimate president of the Syrian Arab Republic from the process of settling [the crisis] is also impossible,” said Peskov
