Geneva, SANA – United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed the heads of four working groups on Syria who will meet in Geneva.
In a statement quoted by Reuters, the UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura expressed his hope that the working groups’ “outcomes could eventually set the stage for a Syrian agreement to end the conflict on the basis of the Geneva Communiqué,” which was issued in June 30 2012.
The groups’ heads are Jan Egeland, Nicolas Michel, Volker Perthes and Birgitta Holst Alani, according to de Mistura.
On his latest visit to Syria, the UN envoy provided answers to inquires from the Syrian side about his proposal on the working groups within efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria.
De Mistura clarified that the objective of the meetings to be held by the working groups is brainstorming and that they are non-binding, adding that whatever the Syrians come to agree on may be helpful in the process of preparing for Geneva 3 conference.
