Al-Laham calls for more coordination among parliamentary institutions to push peace forwards

New York, SANA-Speaker of People’s Assembly Mohammad Jihad al-Laham discussed on Wednesday with Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Martin Chungong the situation in Syria and the region, cooperation between people’s Assembly and the Union to confront terrorism, extremism and press countries which sponsor terrorism to stop violating the international law.

During the meeting, which was held on the sidelines of the 4th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament at the UN HQ in New York, al-Laham called for more cooperation and coordination among international parliamentary institutions to push peace and development forwards, stop wars and foreign intervention in the internal affairs of sovereign countries.

Chungong, for his part, affirmed the IPU support to the people’s Assembly move at international circles and its participation in proposing the crisis in Syria at the Union’s forums, expressing the IPU willingness to offer any assistance which would back the Syrian people and the international initiatives to end the crisis in Syria.

In a similar meeting with former President of the IPU Abdul-Wahid al-Radi, al-Laham affirmed that “While Syria launches initiatives and steps to boost reconciliations among the Syrians and approve laws and reforms in the country, some regional states, like Saudi Arabia and Turkey, support terrorism.”

Later, al-Laham met a number of the Syrian community members in New York at a dinner banquet, saying that the Syrians abroad are the national and civilized extension to motherland, Syria, who bear its message and form a power source to it against pressures.

Syria is taking part in the 4th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament which started its activities on August 31st with a delegation headed by al-Laham.
