Damascus, SANA – Minister of Education Dr. Hazwan al-Waz discussed on Tuesday with the Regional Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for the Middle East and North Africa Peter Salamah the joint projects in educational issues between the two sides.
During the meeting, Minister al-Waz said the damage that affected infrastructure in the educational sector during the crisis was huge, estimating the losses at SYP 170 billion, with nearly 1000 persons killed, half of them were children.
He said the number of schools before the crisis was 22,650, adding that more than 5,000 of them came out of service due to four-years-long terrorist attacks, yet, 600 schools are currently used as places for displaced persons and about 17,000 schools are receiving 4,3 million students.
For his part, Salamah highly appreciated the standing cooperation between the UNICEF and the Syrian Ministry of Education, especially in providing the needs and equipment to ensure that the educational process will continue as planned.
