Damascus, SANA – Non-traditional water sources and uses, organic fertilizers and humic acids, modern irrigation means and the importance of integrated management of plants and farming in increasing production were the main points of discussion at a scientific seminar held at Damascus University.
The seminar was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture in cooperation with the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA).
Minister of Agriculture Ahmed al-Qadiri underlined the importance of cooperation with ICARDA, particularly with regard to the project of enhancing food security in the Arab countries, which has carried out various field and technical activities related to planting wheat species of high quality and applying modern technologies to increase production and reduce costs.
Minister al-Qadiri hailed the positive role of ICRADA in developing the agricultural sector in Syria through joint work which has continued for 37 years, making important progress.
For his part, ICARDA Assistant Director-General Majd Jamal said the first four-year stage of the food security project, in which five Arab countries took part, has finished, noting that the second stage, involving eight Arab countries, has started.
He pointed out that the initial results of the project show that there is an increase in wheat production in the targeted sites with a percentage of 28 %, while in other areas it reached 75 %.
The project of enhancing food security aims at increasing wheat production through using new methods and techniques.
