Damascus, SANA – UN Security Council condemned the terrorist mortar attack on the Russian Embassy in Damascus on Tuesday.
Lithuanian Ambassador Raimonda Murmokaite, whose country holds the rotating Security Council presidency this month, said the “terrorist attack caused serious damage to the building.”
The Council’s 15 members stressed the need to bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice.
The US also denounced the attack on the Russian Embassy, renewing calls for reaching a political solution to the crisis in Syria.
Yesterday, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismissed the attack with two mortar shells on the building of its embassy as “an act of terror aimed against the Russian Embassy,” and condemned those who perpetrated, organized and instigated the attack.
Spokesperson for the embassy Asyat Ibrahimova told SANA that one of the shells smashed into the embassy’s building and the other hit its main entrance.
She however noted that the Embassy is operating as usual.
While urging the international community “to give due assessment to the terrorist attack against the Russian diplomatic mission,” Moscow reaffirmed “solidarity with the Syrian authorities in their efforts to combat the terrorist threat” facing the country.
