Arab Teachers Union’s conference kicks off in Damascus

Damascus, SANA – Under the patronage of President Bashar al-Assad, activities of the 19th general conference of the Union of Arab Teachers (UAT) kicked off on Sunday in Damascus.
Delegations from 12 Arab countries are taking part in the 3-day conference which is set to discuss the main issues and challenges facing Arab teachers.

During the conference, Education Minister Hazwan al-Waz stressed the importance of the teachers’ role in consolidating the values of citizenship and belonging as well as their contribution to the homeland’s steadfastness.

Al-Waz pointed out that the destruction wrought to antiquities and historical monuments revealed “a grave vacuum in the Arab educational performance and proves that curricula were not up to the standard”, which he said makes it imperative to reconsider the current curricula and prepare teachers on a new basis in a way that establishes the inseparability of education and teaching.

For his part, Secretary General of the UAT Faraj al-Murtada affirmed that Syria and some other Arab countries are “in the grip of sad events that target their culture and existence” stoked by regional powers and international intelligence to serve the Zionist entity.

For his part, Premier Dr. Wael al-Halaqi said in a statement to reporters following the opening of the conference that the participation of Arab delegations drives home a strong message that “the free Arab citizens are supporting Syria against the terrorist war targeting the entire Arab nation and the national Arab identity, not only Syria.”
