A Long-distance swimming festival kicks off in Tartous with participation of 65 swimmers

Tartous, SANA- On the occasion of the Martyrs’ Day, the General Sport Union in Tartous city on Friday held a festival of long-distance swimming with the participation of 65 swimmers from Damascus, Aleppo, Deir Ezzor, Lattakia, Tartous.

The ages of the swimmers ranged from 12 to 23 years old as they were divided into two categories, one of which includes those who are under 15 and the second embraces the rest of swimmers.

In the above-18 men category, Ahmed Mardenli was ranked first, Mohammad Abbas second and Mamoun Sbaini third while in the women category Yusra Mardini came first, Fira Kalous second and Rose Jalbout and Lina Qabaoua third.

In the U-15 male category, Khaled Barakat ranked first, Basel Habbal second and Karam Alaa Eddin came third while in the female category, Sham Nimr came in the first place, Enana Suleiman in the second and Lina al-Safadi in the third place.

Chairman of the Syrian Swimming Union Firas Mua’ala told SANA that the distance of the races between the starting point in Arwad Island and till Tartous coast is estimated at about 3 km.

He added that 7 boats accompanied the swimmers to deal with any emergency situation, indicating that the swimmers were distinguished by their skills and fitness despite of the difficult weather conditions as the speed of the wind was high.
