Aid delivery is active in Sweida amid greater coordination with int’l bodies

Sweida, (SANA) Some 10,874 food baskets have been agreed by the relief subcommittee in Sweida province to be distributed to needy families.

The agreement came during a meeting of the subcommittee with the attendance of Minister of Social Affairs Kinda al-Shammat, chairperson of the Higher Relief Committee and head of the mission of  the UN Higher Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Tarek al-Kurdi.

The food baskets will include 5,893 to the displaced families due to the crisis in the country and 4,981 to other affected and needy families.

Al-Shammat highlighted the importance of the opening of a UNHCR office in the southern province as it will encourage other international organizations to follow suit.

She noted that the humanitarian and relief aid comes through Nassib crossing in Daraa on the border with Jordan and is deposited in the storehouses of the UNHCR office so as to be later distributed to the beneficiaries in the southern provinces of Sweida, Daraa and Qunaitra.

For his part, head of the UNHCR office in Sweida said the office will be fully empowered to facilitate relief work, adding that there will be greater coordination in aid delivery and distribution processes that take place across the Syrian-Jordanian borders.

Later, Minister al-Shammat and al-Kurdi visited the social care center of the Archdiocese of Bosra-Hauran, Jabal al Arab and Golan of the Greek Orthodox Church.

They listened to a review of the programs carried out by the center to develop human capabilities and create job opportunities, in addition to developing relief programs targeting the displaced people.
