Russia not planning to upgrade resupply facility in Tartous before political decision is adopted

Moscow, SANA-The Russian Navy’s resupply facility in Syria’s Tartous Port could be upgraded only after an appropriate political decision is adopted, a Russian Navy Main Staff source said on Friday.

“If the political leadership of the country makes such a decision, the Russian Navy’s resupply facility in Syria’s Tartous will be seriously upgraded to match the new political and military situation in the Mediterranean region,” he said.

All efforts to overhaul the installation’s infrastructure will be made in coordination with the Syrian authorities, he added.

“However, the possibility of turning this resupply facility into a fully-fledged naval base is not being considered so far,” he said.

“An overhaul of this resupply installation will envisage bolstering all protection systems of the facility, including its air and counter-sabotage defenses. After the facility’s infrastructure is modernized, one of its floating docks will be adjusted in order to enable it to accept a cruiser or a destroyer, while the second dock will be able to accommodate two frigates or large assault ships simultaneously,” the source said.
