Damascus, SANA-Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Bassam Sabbagh affirmed Syria’s support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) through providing all the necessary facilities to it.
This came during Sabbagh’s meeting with Deputy Commissioner-General of the UNRWA in the Near East, Antonia Marie De Meo on Monday.
Sabbagh reiterated Syria’s stance in support of UNRWA ‘s work which stems from its firm stance of upholding the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and, in particular, its right to return and establish an independent State on its national soil.
Sabbagh pointed out the Israeli hostile campaigns against UNRWA aimed at liquidating the agency’s mandate and ending the services it provides to the Palestinian people, stressing Syria’s absolute refusal to undermine the mandate of UNRWA and its continued support for the Palestinian people.
He also referred to the challenges facing the continuity of its work, especially in light of the tragic conditions that the Palestinian people are experiencing in Gaza Strip, including ensuring the necessary funding for its work, expressing regret that some countries have suspended their financial contributions to the Agency based on Israeli allegations and the incitement campaign it is promoting against UNRWA.
the Deputy Commissioner, in turn, thanked Syria for the facilities provided to the agency and presented the effort made by the agency to help the Palestinian refugees in Syria and neighboring countries and its relentless efforts to address the financial crisis facing it as a result of the severe shortage in funding.
