Syria discusses humanitarian needs with UN and Red Cross

New York, SANA-Syria and United Nations discussed aspects of cooperation between them and exchanged views on all challenges facing the country.

That came during a meeting between Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, head of Syrian delegation to 78th session of UN General Assembly and UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres.

Ambassador Sabbagh referred to the disastrous effects of the unilateral coercive measures imposed by the U.S. and the European Union(EU) on the Syrians, asserting that these measures are behind the difficult economic and humanitarian situation in Syria.

Sabbagh has affirmed Syria’s condemnation of the repeated Israeli aggression on Syrian territory which targeted vital civilian facilities such airports, ports, and residential neighborhoods, in addition to the illegitimate Israeli occupation acts in occupied Syrian Golan, which cause escalation of tension and instability state.

He thanked the Secretary-General for launching the urgent appeal to raise funds to help Syria after the devastating earthquake struck it on February 6th.

In turn, Guterres affirmed his concern about the increasing humanitarian needs of the Syrians, as he hoped that the continued cooperation would ensure providing humanitarian aid for all Syrians.

In a relevant context, Ambassador Sabbagh discussed with President of International Committee of Red Cross, Mirjana Egger, means to enhance joint cooperation between the Syrian government and the Red Cross International Committee.

Sabbagh hailed the role of Red Cross in Syria, calling for need to raise the necessary funding to confront the growing humanitarian needs resulting from the repercussions earthquake.

In turn, Egger said that she visited Syria after the devastating earthquake and was briefed on the humanitarian needs, affirming that the Red Cross is always keen to help all Syrians and alleviate their suffering.
