Several planes carrying relief material arrive at the airports of Damascus and Lattakia

Damascus, Lattakia, SANA- Four planes carrying aid for the earthquake victims, provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), UAE and the Sultanate of Oman, arrived at the international airports of Damascus and Lattakia on Monday.

SANA reporter said that a plane arrived on Monday at Damascus International Airport coming from the UAE with relief materials provided by the WHO to help the earthquake-affected people.

“The plane is carrying 33 tons of first-aid medical supplies and hospital equipment,” according to WHO Acting Representative in Syria, Dr. Iman Shankiti.

Shankiti said that this is the second WHO relief plane to arrive at Damascus International Airport as another plane had landed at Aleppo International Airport.

Shankiti noted that the three planes were carrying 128 tons of relief materials, indicating that at the beginning of the earthquake disaster, the aid focused on equipment and tools that are used in operations in hospitals, but now attention is payed for providing health care services, medicines, and hospital supplies, health centers, and shelters.

She noted that the Health system in Syria has been suffering for 12 years, and the recent earthquake as well as the tough economic conditions have reflected negatively on the ability to provide the necessary healthcare.

Shankiti, on behalf of the organization, called for exerting more efforts to support the health system in Syria in order to be able to confront any challenges in the future.

Al-Shankiti noted that it is the second WHO relied plane to arrive at Damascus International Airport, while a third plane had earlier arrived at Aleppo International Airport.

On Monday morning, an Emirati plane carrying relief supplies arrived at Lattakia International Airport, according to the Director of Lattakia Airport, Eng. Ziyad Al-Tawil who noted that the plane was carrying 27.7 tons of foodstuffs.
