NEW YORK: Russia on Friday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that would have extended cross-border aid to Syria by one year.
During a session held on Friday, western countries hindered the adoption of a Russian resolution to extend the Council’s resolution for extra 6 months and increase projects of early recovering.
Syria’s permanent representative to the UN, Bassam Sabbagh, thanked Russia for its initiative to submit the draft resolution, hailing its genuine efforts to ensure response to the Syrians’ humanitarian needs effectively.
He expressed Syria’s regret that UN Security Council hasn’t adopted Russia’s draft resolution and the insistence of some western countries to mislead facts and ignore the true and objective concern sides expressed by delegations of Russia and Syria.
Sabbagh affirmed that Syria pays special interest to follow the humanitarian issue and it exerts tireless efforts to meet the humanitarian needs for its people and ease their suffering.
