Moscow, SANA- Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, stressed that the United Nations Secretariat must be committed to non-alignment and finding solutions between the differing parties in any crisis.
“The UN Secretary-General is under pressure from the West with regard to what is happening in eastern Ukraine, and his statements about this are inconsistent with his position and his powers under the charter of the organization,” Lavrov said during talks with the UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen in Moscow today.
On the crisis in Syria, Lavrov said “we are constantly communicating with all parties concerned in Syria, and we seek to move forward and achieve progress in this regard, although some countries are trying to create obstacles in all issues, especially against Russia.”
Lavrov highlighted the need for the Secretariat to adhere to non-alignment and find solutions between the differing parties in any crisis, including Syria, but unfortunately, Western pressures affect the United Nations Secretariat.
In turn, Pedersen noted that the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed the United Nations’ support for the rule of law, the UN Charter and the UN resolutions related to Ukraine, expressing concern over Russia’s decision to recognize the Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk.
At the same time, Pedersen stressed the importance of calling for de-escalation and reducing tension on the basis of the UN principles.
Pedersen expressed hope that the recent international events would not affect matters relating to Syria.
