Damascus, SANA- Health Minister Dr. Hassan al-Ghobash has stressed that achieving a safer world requires stronger tools to detect and respond to epidemics quickly and sustainably fund them.
Al-Ghobash remarks came during a virtual speech at on Tuesday at the Special Session of the World Health Assembly, held in Geneva, with the participation of Syria.
The spread of the Coronavirus has provided evidence that health is not a by-product of development, but rather an essential component of social, economic and political stability, the Minister said.
He added “The past year and a half have shown that the emergence of the pandemic and its repercussions has left the world without any preparation for the future as the existing tools are ineffective and there are many gaps in preparedness and response that have highlighted the need for member states to further strengthen WHO’s work in cases of health emergency.”
Dr. al-Ghobash underlined importance of strengthening international cooperation and solidarity to remove all obstacles that prevented the arrival of basic health materials, which requires refraining from enacting unilateral economic, financial or commercial measures and from applying them in contravention of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
