Sabbagh: Israel is the main source of threat to peace and security in the region

New York, SANA- Syria said that establishing a zone free from weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East requires forcing Israel entity to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty and subjecting all its facilities to the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

“Syria considers the Establishment of zones free from nuclear weapon and weapons of mass destruction a positive step forward achieving of non-proliferation and disarmament goals, and a key element in the creation of a peaceful and stable world, “Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Bassam Sabbagh said in a statement read before the Second Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Sabbagh added that Syria was one of the first countries to adhere to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in 1969, and signed the Convention on Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Biological Weapons in 1972, and in 2013 acceded to the Chemical Weapons Convention and all of this confirms its keenness to move forward with measures to make the Middle East region free of all weapons of mass destruction as an important measure that seriously contributes to maintaining regional and international peace and security.

Sabbagh indicated that at a time when all countries of Middle East acceded to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, Israel continues its refusal to acced to the treaty and other major treaties and agreements related to the Prohibition and Non-Proliferation of Weapons Mass Destruction, which makes this entity the main reason to undermine the effectiveness of the non-proliferation regime in the region and the world.

He added that protection umbrella provided by the Western countries, on top the United States contributed to the exclusive possession of Israel of Weapons of Mass destruction in the Middle East region , as well as the support for Israel by these countries to develop its military nuclear, biological and chemical programs , which makes Israel the main source of threat to peace and security in the region and the world.
