2014 Special Olympics MENA Regional Games kick off with Syria’s participation

Cairo, SANA – The 2014 Special Olympics MENA Regional Games kicked off on Thursday at the Air Defense Stadium in Cairo, Egypt, with the participation of around 1,000 athletes from 14 countries.

Syria is participating in the event with a team consisting of 56 athletes who will compete in 10 games: swimming, track and field, cycling, equestrian games, weightlifting, table tennis, badminton, gymnastics, rollerblading, and bocce.

The opening ceremony was attended by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and a number of ministers and ambassadors of Arab countries.

The previous session of the Special Olympics MENA Regional Games was held in Damascus in 2010, and witnessed that participation of over 2,000 athletes from 23 countries.
