Lavrov, Kerry discuss Syria, Ukraine, Iran on sidelines of OSCE Ministerial Council

Moscow, SANA – Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry discussed situation in the Middle East, particularly the crisis in Syria, the situation in Ukraine and Iran’s nuclear program, Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued Thursday.

The statement added that Kerry and Lavrov held bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s (OSCE) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Basel, Switzerland.

It pointed out the talks focused on the crisis in Syria with the two ministers stressing “the importance of reaching lasting agreements between the Syrian government and a wide spectrum of political opposition forces on the principles of the Geneva communique of June 30, 2012.”

The two foreign ministers also exchanged views on a number of critical international and regional issues, including the Palestinian-Israeli settlement, expressing “commitment to give an impetus to the stalled Middle East peace process with a special focus on a comprehensive solution to the Palestinian problem.”

Lavrov, Mogherini discuss bilateral relations, settlement of crisis in Syria

In a relevant context, means of settling the crisis in Syria and relations between Russia and the European Union were the focus of talks between Lavrov and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini.

In a statement issued Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry said that Lavrov’s meeting with Mogherin was held on the sidelines of 21st Ministerial Council of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s (OSCE) in Basel, Switzerland.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that both sides discussed pressing international issues with focus laid on settlement in the Middle East, particularly means of solving the crisis in Syria.
