Workshop marking International Day of People with Disability at Damascus University

Damascus, SANA – A workshop marking the International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), which is observed on December 3rd, was held in Damascus University Faculty of Education.

In a speech at the workshop, Minister of Higher Education Mohammed Amer Mardini noted that physical disability has become a common social problem, particularly in poor countries due to the spread of hunger, diseases, disasters, and wars.

workshop3The minister pointed out that the unjust war on Syria resulted in large number of disability cases, making it necessary for individuals and institutions to contribute to rehabilitating them and helping them be reintegrated into society and become active members in it.

He said that the recent years have witnessed an increasing care about rehabilitating and educating people with disabilities, including people disabled due to the war on Syria, and fulfilling their needs.

Director of the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs, Hadeel al-Asmar, cited Syria’s remarkable progress in supporting people with disabilities, especially after joining the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2006, whether through issuing legislations, forming the Disability Council, or making special institutes for providing care to this segment of society.

workshop2A documentary was screened at the workshop, narrating the success stories of people with disabilities in Syria and other countries, and showing their ability to continue their lives and overcome difficulties.

Other activities included a musical show, several presentations, and work papers by associations specialized in disability affairs in Syria to crystalize a national vision and plan that would help alleviate the burden of this problem in society.

The work shop was organized by Damascus University in cooperation with the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs.
