Decrease in participation in People’s Assembly elections due to coronavirus, presence of Syrians abroad

Damascus, SANA- Justice Minister, Judge Hisham al-Sha’ar indicated that the number of those entitled to vote according to the records of the Ministries of Interior and Justice reached about 19 million, while the number of those who exercised their electoral rights amounted to 6 million and 224 thousand and 687 voters, which means that the participation rate reached about 33.17 percent.

In a statement to journalists after announcing the results of the People’s Assembly elections for the 3rd legislative term by the Higher Judicial Committee for Elections, al-Sha’ar noted that a number of citizens refrained from voting due to the fear of the coronavirus pandemic.

He added that Syrians abroad do not have the right to vote and some could not come to exercise their right due to the closure of borders and airports due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
