Beijing: U.S. politicizes humanitarian issues in Syria, adopts double standards

Beijing, SANA- The Chinese Foreign Ministry affirmed that what has taken place in Syria, including the suffering of its people has resulted exactly from the “Wrong acts taken by the U.S. and some other states which have outrageously interfered in Syria’s affairs and in the internal affairs of the others.”

In a press conference on Monday, Geng Shuang, Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Spokesman, strongly condemned the statements made by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the use of the “Veto” by Beijing against a draft resolution at the International Security Council on the delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria.

“If Washington doesn’t really care about the Syrian people and the humanitarian situation in Syria, it should think carefully because it and other countries bear the responsibility for what has happed in Syria, and in this way the world can clearly see those who continue to lie with hearts full of hypocrisy and blood on their hands,” Geng said.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman reiterated Beijing’s strong rejection of the “unjustified accusations leveled by the American side regarding its position,” stressing that “the United States politicizes humanitarian issues and adopts double standards.”

Geng said that China votes at the UN Security Council “on the basis of right and wrong,” noting that the Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, Ambassador Zhang Jun, explained China’s position in his statement at the Security Council that China cast its vote on the merits of the issue itself and the basic interests of the Syrian people, stressing however, that China firmly rejects the baseless accusations by the United States.

Geng wondered if the United States was genuinely concerned with the Syrian people and the humanitarian situation in Syria, “why did they not vote in favor of the Russian draft resolution as they had every opportunity to fulfill their promise to the Syrian people.”

He stressed that “Washington’s failure to vote in favor of the Russian draft indicates once again that their interest is limited to hypocrisy as they  adopt a typical double standard approach which is concrete evidence on the politicization of humanitarian issues.”

On Friday, Russia and China used a veto against a draft Security Council resolution on the transfer of humanitarian aid to Syria that would exploit the humanitarian situation there and violate Syria’s sovereignty.
