New York, SANA- Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari on Wednesday said that Syria will continue to support Cuba’s people and government in the face of the unjust US embargo imposed on it since 1962.
In a statement entitled “ Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States against Cuba”, al-Jaafari said that Syria believes that condemning the embargo imposed by the United States against the Cuban people is no longer sufficient today, especially in light of the escalating policy adopted by the current US government, which is based on tightening this blockade , so that its effects exceed Cuba’s territorial borders.
Al-Jaafari pointed out the similarity of suffering of the Syrian and Cuban peoples as a result of the unilateral economic measures imposed on them.
He said that the Syrian people, like the Cuban people, have been suffering for decades to date the serious repercussions of unilateral coercive economic measures imposed by the United States and some other governments, which have reached an unprecedented level during recent years, in which the disruptive effects of these measures on the economy and development in Syria have accompanied with the repercussions of the terrorist war and with the immoral policies of some governments, aimed at hindering the start of the reconstruction and recovery process and hindering the return of displaced Syrians to their homeland.
Al-Jaafari pointed to the policy of double standards adopted by some countries in this regard, wondering how the UN representatives of some countries use the UN platforms to call for accelerating objectives of the implementation of goals of the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030, meanwhile, their governments impose unilateral coercive economic measures against Cuba, Syria, Iran, Venezuela, the DPRK, Palestine, Russia and other countries.
