Damascus Agricultural Directorate affirms black beetle not harmful to humans and plants

Damascus, SANA- Head of Damascus and its Countryside Agricultural Directorate Dr. Ali Sa’adat affirmed that the “Black beetle” insect is not harmful to humans and plants and it is useful as it feeds on harmful insects in the soil and the plants.

Sa’adat, in a statement to SANA, said that the black beetles have a very short life span that ranges from 22 to 26 days and they are attracted to the light at night, noting that their large spread over the past two days in several areas in Damascus and its countryside came as a result of heavy rains and the expansion of vegetation.

For his part, Head of Health Affairs Department at Damascus Governorate Shadi Khallouf told SANA that pesticides have been sprayed to combat the black beetles, particularly in vicinity of the residential neighborhoods.

Khallouf added that the Department will continue to spray pesticides even on holidays to curb the spread of black beetles.

In the beginning of April, the black beetles spread over wide areas in the countryside of Homs and Hama and different other areas in al-Badyia (desert).
