Lavrov, Pedersen affirm necessity of joint work to solve crisis in Syria

Moscow, SANA- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov affirmed the necessity of moving forwards in finding a solution to the crisis in Syria based on UN resolution no. 2254 and creating suitable circumstances for the return of the displaced to their homeland.

The resolution no. 2254, which was unanimously approved by the Security Council, affirms that the Syrians are the only ones who decide the future of their country by themselves without any foreign interference.

At the beginning of his meeting with UN Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen, Lavrov said “We appreciate our cooperation and the cooperation of the countries of Astana format with the UN with regard to pushing forwards the political process according to the resolution no. 2254, and we hope that dialogue will continue with the new envoy according to the same approach.”

Pedersen underlined the necessity of joint work between Russia and the UN based on the UN resolution no. 2254 for relaunching the political process to solve the crisis in Syria and to guarantee the return of the displaced Syrians to their homeland.

In a relevant context, Russian Defense Minister Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, meeting Pedersen, said “We hope to move to an active political settlement represented in forming a committee to discuss and form the constitution and the mechanisms of approving it.”

Shoigu expressed hope that Pedersen will be able to fulfill his tasks which “can’t be considered easy tasks,” considering that ” All the available capabilities to overcome the obstacles facing the progress in solving the crisis are not considered so great from our point of view.”
