Kuala Lumpur, SANA – Malaysia has joined the countries that have been criticizing and questioning the effectiveness of the military operations carried out by the US and its allies in the framework of the recently-formed international alliance against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist organization.
Malaysian Minister of Defense Hishammuddin Hussein told The Star newspaper that the airstrikes waged by the US and its allies against ISIS in Iraq and Syria “seem to be ineffective so far,” adding that “therefore, we need to think of an approach of our own.”
Malaysia has affirmed the need for regional cooperation to repel terrorists in Southeast Asia, amid increasing fears worldwide of the threat those terrorists pose to regional and international peace and security.
Malaysian authorities estimate that there are 40 Malaysian nationals who have joined the terrorist organizations operating in Syria.
Earlier this week, they announced the arrest of 36 Malaysians over the current year, some of those were involved in recruiting persons to transport them to fight alongside the terrorist organizations in Syria.
Quoted by the AFP, the Malaysian Defense Minister said his country could not work alone concerning efforts to confront the threat of terrorism and that it should cooperate with its friends and neighbors.
He, at the same time, found it “shocking” that some Arab countries have been silent with regard to ISIS terrorist organization.
