Canadian-US delegation visits al-Qalamoun area and Homs countryside

Homs, SANA- A delegation from the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in the US and Canada visited on Thursday a number of civil and religion institutions and met displaced families in al-Qalamoun area in Damascus Countryside and al-Hafar and Sadad villages in the southeast countryside of Homs.

The visit aims at providing support and assistance to those affected by terrorism, as well as the needy children, orphans and elderly people.

The delegation visited the Islamic Charitable Association in Deir Atiyeh and listened to an explanation about its humanitarian aid activities and development programs which offered a plenty of job opportunities.

Head of the Association Mustafa Bakir hailed the MCC efforts to help the needy people, noting that 4500 families benefit from the association’s assistance and services.

Members of the delegation also met displaced families at the temporary housing centers in Deir Atiyeh, al-Brikeh, and al-Hmeireh areas, and listened to their suffering and needs in order to assist them and help them return to their houses.

Later on, the delegation inspected the rehabilitation works at Mar Georgeous and Mar Sarkis churches in Sadad village in Homs countryside after being cleansed from terrorists.

For his part, Director of the Forum for Development, Culture and Dialogue in Lebanon Rev. Dr. Riad Jarjour said that MCC supports war-affected people, adding that the delegation’s visit to Syria intended to express solidarity and support to those who forced to leave their houses, provide assistance and meet their needs under these difficult circumstances.

The delegation included a number of MCC Executive Directors of in Canada, the US, Europe, Middle East, Syria and Lebanon accompanied by Rev. Dr. Riad Jarjour, Director of the Forum for Development, Culture and Dialogue in Lebanon.

MCC was founded 100 years ago. It now operates in 60 countries with the aim of providing humanitarian aid and development assistance and enhancing civil peace.
