Lavrov: the West turns a blind eye to the use of chemical weapons by terrorists in Syria

New York, SANA- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov asserted that the West turns a blind eye to the terrorists’ use of chemical weapons in Syria and rejects to condemn them; rather, it prefers to accuse the Syrian Government to serve its targets.

Lavrov, during a UN Security Council session on Non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, added that terrorists having the technique of manufacturing chemical materials raise worries”, affirming that this danger goes beyond the Middle East with the existence of a large number of foreign terrorists who gained experience in manufacturing such type of weapons.

“Russia has suggested that UNSC adopts a resolution or at least a presidential announcement in the past three years to condemn the terrorist acts in Syria and Iraq, but, unfortunately, there was an opposition by the West which preferred to condemn Damascus to serve strategic interests,” Lavrov said.

He added that it is important to reach an inquiry mechanism regarding chemical weapons in Syria with respect to international treaties, calling for respecting resolution no.1540 which calls on all countries to prevent groups from having such weapons.
