Damascus, SANA – SOS Children’s Villages Association in Syria wrapped up the first stage of a relief program to distribute food packages to terrorism-affected families in a number of provinces.
Over 10,000 parcels containing food supplies were distributed to the beneficiaries in Damascus and its countryside, Homs and Daraa since the beginning of 2014.
Coordinator of the relief program in the southern region Nazih Karaz said in a statement to SANA reporter that the Association tried to reach the largest number of beneficiaries after calculated planning and preparation and comprehensive study of the targeted areas.
Aid distribution in Homs within the program was the Association’s first time in the province, with a total of 1500 packages.
The targeted areas in Homs included the Old City, Karm al-Zaitoun and al-Wuroud neighborhood.
The number of food packages allocated to Damascus and its countryside was 5750, while 3000 other packages were distributed to affected people in Daraa.
The Association first kicked off its relief program in August, 2013 through a campaign in which iftar (fast-breaking) meals were distributed to more than 60,000 people who observed the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in the provinces of Damascus, Damascus Countryside, Aleppo, Sweida and Daraa.
An initiative followed in which the Association distributed new clothes, toys and sweets to over 8000 children in Aleppo and Damascus during Eid al-Fitr, a holiday that marks the end of Ramadan. Formula milk was distributed to 4000 infants in Aleppo.
An number of other campaigns were also carried out by the Association, including “I have the Right to Learn” campaign, in which 16,000 school bags were distributed to affected children and “Keep Me Warm” campaign which saw the distribution of winter clothes and blankets to 20,000 families in Damascus, Damascus Countryside, Aleppo, Daraa and the coastal region.
The latest campaign was titled “Let’s Give More”, which was launched last July and seeks to promote a new program for increasing monthly sponsorship payments for the orphaned children of whom the Association takes care.
The SOS Children’s Villages Association is a non-governmental and non-profit organization that provides care for orphaned children in a safe, loving environment, in addition to organizing various programs and projects to empower families and sponsor and help children affected by the current crisis.
It is one of several NGOs operating in Syria to provide support and assistance to people who were affected by the ongoing crisis in the country. The targeted people mostly include displaced families and children staying at makeshift residential centers and poor and needy families.
