Damascus, SANA – Syria has welcomed the appointment of Staffan de Mistura as UN Special Envoy out of its belief in a political solution to the crisis in the country through a Syrian-led dialogue among the Syrians.
“We wish that de Mistura’s approach will be built on objectivity, honesty and the rules of the international law and the principles and goals of the UN Charter,” the Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs said in a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on Wednesday.
“On top of those principles,” the Ministry added, “respecting the national sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs and respecting the Syrian people’s will and choices.”
UN Secretary General appointed de Mistura as the UN Special Envoy for Syria on July 10th after the resignation of former envoy Lakhdar Brahimi last May.
