United Nations, SANA – The Security Council called upon the Israeli and Palestinian sides to observe a ceasefire and respect international humanitarian laws, specifically those on protecting civilians.
A statement issued on Saturday by the 15 members of the Council called for defusing tension in Gaza Strip, restoring calm, and reinstating the ceasefire announced in 2012, voicing concern over the crisis related to Gaza and protecting civilians.
Palestine’s representative at the United Nations Riyad Mansour said in a speech following the statement that this statement doesn’t meet the Palestinians’ aspirations, hoping that Israel will commit to it and cease its aggression against the Palestinians in Gaza Strip immediately, noting that this aggression caused hundreds of deaths and injuries among Palestinians and caused much destruction to infrastructure.
Mansour called for a clear condemnation of Israel and issuing a resolution forcing it to cease its aggression and providing protection by the international community to civilians in the sector.
He also demanded an investigation into Israeli crimes, particularly the murder of Palestinian youth Mohammad Abu Khdeir who was burned alive by Israeli settlers.
The Israeli aggression on Gaza has been going on for six days, claiming the lives of over 135 Palestinians, injuring around 800, and destroying around 200 house4s completely along with civilian, health, and services facilities.
