New York, SANA. Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said that Russia doesn’t support the idea of imposing an embargo on supplying weapons to Syria because it doesn’t see how it can be applied on the armed opposition.
In a press statement on Friday in response to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s statement in which he proposed a weapons embargo, Churkin said that experience in Libya showed that such an embargo is ineffectual when it comes to armed groups, as weapons were sent freely to various armed groups despite the embargo.
He noted that the weapons sent to gunmen in Libya are now being circulated freely across Africa, which is why Russia doesn’t want to pursue such an approach in Syria.
