Damascus, SANA – Minister of State for Environment Affairs Nazira Sarkis said Syria is among the top countries to have met its obligations under the international environment conventions to which it acceded, citing Vienna Convention and Montreal Protocol for the protection of the Ozone Layer.
The Minister’s comments came during an event held at the Environment Ministry to mark the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, which is celebrated on September 16th every year.
“Syria succeeded in meeting the challenges posed by the terms of Montreal Protocol and the various amendments to it,” she said.
Sarkis explained that Syria has given priority to looking for eco-friendly alternatives for environment protection and cooperated with concerned local and international bodies to investigate ozone-depleting substances and find alternatives, in addition to intensifying awareness-raising campaigns among citizens about these alternatives.
The Minister stressed the need for exerting more efforts to get rid of all substances that affect environment and the Ozone layer and boosting coordination with governmental and civil organizations on national, regional and international levels to achieve that end.
