Moscow: The US is invited to Astana talks on Syria

Lavrov, SANA – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the United States has already been invited to Astana talks on Syria, due to be held on January 23th.

“As I said yesterday, we have already invited [the US],” Lavrov told journalists in Moscow on Thursday.

On Tuesday Lavrov said at his annual press conference that if the US will accepts the invitation to the talks in Astana, “This would be the first official contact that could pave the way for talks on how to make the fight against terrorism in Syria more efficient.”

Meanwhile, Russian President’s Special Representative for Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov discussed with the Ambassador of the United States in Moscow John Tefft preparations for Astana talks on the crisis in Syria, according to a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The statements noted that invitations to Astana talks have not been sent yet.

In the same context, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced that the Russian side is continuing contacts with the Iranian partners on the issues of preparing for the upcoming Astana meetings, including on the participation of the US in these talks.
